Cops nab man for alleged robbery turned murder in Bukit Mertajam


BUKIT MERTAJAM: A man in his 40s has been arrested following the death of a disabled man during a robbery at Guar Perahu here on Wednesday (May 8).

Central Seberang Perai OCPD Asst Comm Helmi Aris said the incident occurred during wee hours in the morning.

"Initial investigation found the incident happened at a double storey house in a village where the decease live with his parent," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

ACP Helmi said the incident was reported by the decease's 80-year-old father at around 8.36am, at Kubang Semang police station informing that his house was robbed and that his wife and his son, a disabled person tied up with hands and feet bound, and mouth gagged with cloth.

ACP Helmi said according to the complainant, he slept in a separate room woke up and went to his 70-year-old wife's room only to find her hands and feet tied with cable ties, and her mouth gagged with cloth and black adhesive tape, with injuries on her right finger at about 6.30am on the same day.

He said the man then checked his 40-year-old disable son's room and found him also tied up with hands and feet bound, and mouth gagged with cloth using adhesive tape, lying unconscious on the floor.

ACP Helmi said the deceased was pronounced dead by medical officers from Bukit Mertajam Hospital at the scene and was sent to the Forensic Unit of Seberang Jaya Hospital for autopsy purposes.

Further investigation by police found there were two suspects believed to be involved in robbing the family.

"We believe the suspects with machetes enter into the house and took some money and a television," he said.

He said following the incident, the suspect in his 40s had been arrested to assist police investigation on the incident.

"Check found the suspect has five criminal and five drug records," he said.

The case is being was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
