“He is facing the destruction of his entire life. That is what he is facing,” Robert McDaniel, Filippi's attorney, said.

Filippi's attorneys said that when he came to the U.S. from Brazil more than 15 years ago, he was smuggled in by criminals from Latin America and was immediately arrested by officers of the Immigration Naturalization Service, the agency then in charge of enforcing immigration laws.

“They decided to turn him around and put him back in with the criminals that had smuggled him into the country, so he could garner intelligence for the benefit of the government,” McDaniel said.

Filippi said he became an informant with a promise that he would be allowed to stay in the U.S. He said he served as an informant for years.

He was awarded a work authorization, a Social Security card and a driver’s license, but now that could all be taken away. Filippi is suing to keep it.

“An executive order was issued by the president, which turned the enforcement and removal policies on their head,” McDaniel said.

His attorneys are looking at his options, including qualifying him for an S visa, putting him on the path to gain a green card.

“We are just asking that law enforcement complete the bargain that it made with him,” George Bruno, Filippi's attorney, said.

Both of Filippi’s attorneys are asking anyone who knows him to contact the ICE office and the U.S. Attorney's Office to urge officials to let him stay in the country.
