Area Happenings: Concerts at Wooster, Ashland colleges, fairgrounds flea market, too

The Wooster Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert at 8:15 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center.

Evening out with John Schmid, 5 p.m. Friday, Fredericksburg Community Library, 108 S. Mill St., Fredericksburg. Soup supper includes soup, salad, bread and dessert, followed by a program by John Schmid. Free will donations accepted.

Wooster Symphony Orchestra performances, 8:15 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center, 525 E. University St., at The College of Wooster. The performance will feature student pianist Adeline Hennebury and guest musician, bass trombonist Michael Becker. The events are open to the public. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Buehler’s Milltown or Towne Market, Scheide Music Center, or at the door. Admission is free for students at The College of Wooster. County Line Historical Museum Open House, noon-3 p.m., Saturday, County Line Historical Society Museum, 281 N. Market St., Shreve. Open houses held the second Saturday of each month. Parking at Shreve Auto Repair, Farmers National Bank and downtown parking lots. Handicap parking at rear of museum, entering alley off East Robinson Street. Flea Market/Craft Show, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Ashland County Fairgrounds, Mozelle Hall. Admission is free.

Wayne County Rural Youth Square/Line Dance, 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Wayne County Fairgrounds Event Center, 199 Vanover St., Wooster. Lessons at 6:45 p.m. All ages welcome; no experience necessary. Live band and caller. Admission is $5.

Drew Lynch, 8 p.m. Saturday, Mansfield Renaissance Theater, 138 Park Ave. W., Mansfield. Drew Lynch captured the hearts of America with his Golden Buzzer performance on Season 10 of America’s Got Talent. Tickets start at $15 at rentickets.org.

SuperBones on Super Bowl Sunday, 2 p.m. Sunday, College of Wooster, Gault Recital Hall, in the Scheide Music Center (525 E. University Street). The College of Wooster Trombone Choir plus the Alumni Trombones, conducted by Jeffrey Lindberg, will perform a special concert. This is a public performance of The Wooster Trombone Choir, which will include College of Wooster alumni as well as students and townspeople.

"Once Upon a Mattress," Feb. 16-19, Ashland University's Hugo Young Theatre; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday. “Once Upon a Mattress” is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale “The Princess and the Pea.” The musical was written by Mary Rodgers (music), Marshall Barer (lyrics), Jay Thompson and Dean Fuller. Tickets can be purchased from the AU campus store in person or by going to ashland.universitytickets.com. Tickets are $2 for AU students, $5 for non-AU students and $10 for adults, faculty/staff and senior citizens. Tickets will not be available for purchase at the door.

Relay For Life Chili Cook-off & Quarter Paddle Auction, 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at the Ashland County Fairgrounds. Cook-off starts is by donation and includes the chili, salad and dessert. The community can come enjoy and vote for their favorite chili entered by the public & relay teams ($5 per entry). Winter Wellness Walk, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, Heartland Trail trailhead, West Market and Depot streets near the Railroad Heritage Depot, Millersburg. Maps will be provided. Registered walkers are eligible to win one of two $20 Bellstore gift cards. The free event is open to community members as a way to celebrate healthy winter activities.

Civil War Round Table, 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, Wooster Branch of the Wayne County Public Library. Presentation is Intrepid Mariners, the saga of the only major battle between ocean-going vessels in the Civil War.

Cabin Fever Soup Supper, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, Castle Club Banquet Center next to Victorian House, Millersburg. Soup offerings are broccoli cheese, chili, potato and signature ham and bean. There will be cornbread, French bread and apple sauce plus chocolate eclair dessert, and cherry pretzel dessert. Coffee, tea and water. The cost is by donation; carry-outs available. 

Central Christian School annual auction, 9 a.m. Saturday, March 11, Central Christian School, 3970 Kidron Road, Kidron. Auction features more than 300 listings with a variety of goods, services and experiences. There will be an online auction March 3-10. Funds raised support the Fair Balance Fund, which allows students’ families to pay variable rates of tuition fairly based on income and resources.

Princess Night Project, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, March 11, Kohl Family YMCA, 477 E. Market St., Akron. Since 2001, local members of Altrusa International, a volunteer service organization, have helped make prom dreams come true for more than 2100 girls by providing them with a free prom dress. No recommendation, pre-registration or qualification are needed.
