BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)– During the last week in March, a group of students enjoyed a unique experience at the Louisiana Art and Science Museum. The young learners were taught how to create electricity out of lemon circuits.

Fourth graders from Bullion Elementary in Ascension Parish took part in the BASF Kids’ Lab field trip.

Over the last 12 years, BASF has sponsored this event for the Ascension Parish Public School Systems to help promote STEM education and help students explore connections between chemistry.

“What it does is it really creates a fun opportunity for kids to do hands-on activities related to science and how chemistry is all around us,” said Sarah Haneline, BASF’s, workforce development and talent strategy manager.

A fourth grader at Bullion Elementary School, Hayden Sehale, says he looks forward to a career in STEM.

“The best field trip ever. We did all of this stuff… man, I really want to be a scientist,” Sehale said.

According to BASF, the first Sunday of each month the Louisiana Art and Science Museum is free to the public.

In addition to this, the museum will feature a special program that links history and STEM. The family-friendly event is called ‘All STEM Leads to Rome.’
