A pair of Wilmington nurses breezed their way through the second episode of the current season of CBS reality show competition "The Amazing Race" March 12, surviving to compete for a $1 million prize for at least one more week.
After barely staving off elimination in last week's season premiere of the show's 37th season, Courtney Ramsey and Jasmin "Jazzy" Carey finished in the middle of the pack in sixth place in an episode that started in Hong Kong and finished in Osaka, Japan.
After the 12th place team was eliminated, 11 teams remain. The show started with 14 teams battling to complete challenges as they race against each other in exotic locations.
Wearing their trademark canary yellow, Ramsey and Carey, who are a couple in addition to being co-workers, weren't heavily featured in the episode but managed their challenges fairly easily.
After Carey expressed excitement about traveling to Japan, the team initially got off to a rough start when they went to the wrong building when looking for a travel agency to book their flight.
But they were still ahead of other teams when they got to an "intersection" in Osaka and had to pair up with another team — Jeff and "Pops," a father and son who work as lumberjacks — to complete a challenge that involved learning a complex Japanese drumming routine.
Ramsey teamed up with the younger lumberjack, and they eventually passed the challenge on their ninth attempt, still ahead of several other teams.
Ramsey and Carey then caught a break by being one of only three teams to choose the challenge of making "mochi" balls out of rice, with the other nine teams learning to tie a complex sumo wrestler belt called a mawashi.
Ramsey and Carey completed the mochi challenge on their first attempt, with Ramsey narrating much of the process.
The couple will be back on "The Amazing Race" 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, for the show's third episode of its 37th season. Episodes air on CBS and can also be streamed on Paramount+.
Teams will also travel to locations including Dubai, United Arab Emirates; rural Bulgaria; and Strasbourg, France.
